Galbiate
Galbiate is a municipality in the Province of Lecco in the Italian region Lombardy with 8578 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).
Geography
Galbiate is about 6 km south of the provincial capital of Lecco and 40 km north-east of the metropolis of Milan, at the foot of Monte Barro ( 922 m, lookout mountain 5 lakes and Lake Lecco, part of Lake Como, in the north, Lake d' Custard Lago di Pusiano in the West, Garlate and Lake Olginate in the east).
The neighboring municipalities are Cortenova, Lierna, Mandello del Lario, Parlasco, Pasturo, Varenna, Prima Luna, Taceno and Varenna.
Culture and sights
- San Giovanni Evangelista, Parish Church
- Church of San Michele: Located in the district of San Michele, 3.4 km north of the center Galbiates on the eastern slope of Monte Barro, the same unfinished church of Milan in the Palazzo Sormani is designed by the Milanese important Baroque architect Attilio Arrigoni ( 1640-1704 ), Andriani and the Rotonda della Besana has built. The impressive shell remained without equipment and without a roof because of the community the money had gone.
- Monte Barro: the regional park " Parco Naturale del Monte Barro " was because of his extraordinary situation ( in the last ice age island mountain in glacier stream came from Bernina and the Ortler and almost to Monza handed ) to the Natural Park of European significance explained. The peculiarities of the flora ( more than 1000 styles in almost 7 km ², including rare präglaziale species) and fauna will be explained in a small museum located in the former Hermitage halfway up the mountain. A few minutes later there is a nature trail. The building was originally part of a high medieval fortification system and was rebuilt in the Renaissance ( Chapel of San Vittore ). The once used as a hostel components was used in the first half of the 20th century as air sanatorium and are now the center of the nature park in a grove of 200 - 300th huge book. On the ascent route to Monte Barro some remains of fortifications from storms ostrogotischer time.
