The Stone Age finds from Passo Gardena - charred bits of wood, animal bones and flint tools - are among the oldest in the area of the sella. We know about the settlement but neither exact as on the use of transition in antiquity, the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

In the beginnings of tourism in the Dolomites, Passo Gardena was barely involved, as there was no paved road. Franz Moroder, mayors of St. Ulrich, 1895/96 sought to the first Passo Gardena hospice, which was built by the Bolzano section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club.

An infrastructure has been created until the First World War in 1915 for the purpose of replenishment front and to supply the troops. The German - Austrian front was in Arabba in Buchensteintal ( defensive Col di Lana ), the connection route ran from Bolzano by Val Gardena with a narrow- gauge railway up Plan ( transfer station ). From here we went on a cable car over the Passo Gardena to Corvara and then over the Passo Campolongo, or alternatively via the Passo Sella and Pordoijoch to the front.

The Gardena Pass was on May 5, 1920 meeting of representatives of the five Ladin valleys in Tyrol, who protested against the denial of self-determination and called for recognition as a separate ethnic group.

For tourist purposes, the Gardena Pass won until the middle of the 20th century in importance. A paved road next to the old Jochfahrweg there is only since 1960. A branched network of hiking trails and ski slopes and lifts emerged on both sides of the pass. In addition to the historic Hospice additional accommodations and shops were built.
