Gedo

Gedo (Arabic غدو Ghidū ) is a region ( Gobolka ) in southwestern Somalia, with about 555,000 inhabitants. Its capital is Garbahaarrey.

Gedo is located inland on the border with Ethiopia and Kenya, and is traversed by the river Jubba. The region comprises the six districts Garbahaarrey, Baardheere, Beledhawo, Ceelwaaq, Doolow and Luuq.

Population

The population of Gedo is majority-owned by the Somali clan of Marehan, a Subclan the Darod. In addition, Ogadeni - Darod and some Borana Oromo are represented. On Jubba the ethnic minority of Gabaweyn ( " Bantu " ) lives.

History

The region was politically marginal, until 1969 the Marehan Darod Siad Barre in a coup seized power in Somalia.
