Middle Shebelle

Shabeellaha Dhexe ( Somali for middle Shabelle; Arab شبيلي الوسطى, DMG Šabailī al - Wusţá ) is a region ( Gobolka ) in central Somalia with about 515,000 inhabitants. Its capital is Jawhar.

Named the region is named after the River Shabelle, which flows through it. It lies on the Indian Ocean north of Mogadishu. Previously, she was, as Shabeellaha Hoose (Lower Shabelle ), part of Benadir region with the state capital Mogadishu as its capital.

The main Somali clan in Shabeellaha Dhexe are the Hawiye. In Jawhar also members of the minority of Shidle live.

Shabeellaha Dhexe is in the districts of Aden Yabal ( Aadan Yabaal ), Balad ( Balcad ) divided Adale ( Cadale ) and Jawhar. Other cities and towns of the region are Mahaddayweyne and Warsheikh.

A private educational initiative to increase the enrollment rate in Shabeellaha Dhexe reached to about 24 %, which is the highest regional rate in southern Somalia and about twice as high as the national average.

Conflicts and the influx of internally displaced persons from embattled Mogadishu led in 2007 to a deterioration of the food situation in the region, which was traditionally regarded as a " breadbasket of the country."
