George Joulwan

George Alfred Joulwan ( born November 16, 1939 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania ) is a former general of the U.S. Army Lebanese descent and from 1993 to 1997, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and 11 at the same time commander of the U.S. European Command.

Military career

Joulwan graduated from Loyola University and at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He served two " rounds " ( tour of duty ) from June 1966 until November 1967 and June 1971 to January 1972 in the Vietnam War. Joulwan commanded from June 1979 until September 1981, the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Division. After that, he was chief of staff of the division. In addition, he served in various capacities from 1982 to the Ministry of Defence. In June 1986, he became deputy chief of staff for operations of the U.S. 7th Army in Germany. In March 1988 he took over command of the 3rd Armored Division and in 1989 became Commanding General of the Fifth U.S. Corps. From November 1990 to October 1993 Joulwan was used as commander of U.S. Southern Command, to then take over the post of Supreme Allied Commander Europe ( SACEUR ) and at the same time the command of the U.S. European Command on 22 October 1993. On 11 July 1997, he finally handed over the command to General Wesley Clark.

General Joulwan was next to General John Abizaid, the highest ranking U.S. military personnel Lebanese descent. After his retirement in 1999, he traveled privately to Lebanon and also visited the place from which his ancestors had emigrated to the United States.
