James G. Stavridis
James George Stavridis (* February 15, 1955 in West Palm Beach, Florida ) is a former admiral of the U.S. Navy. He served from June 30, 2009 as the 15th Commanding General of U.S. European Command ( EUCOM ) and additionally since July 2, 2009 until his retirement on 13 May 2013 as the 16th Supreme Allied Commander Europe ( SACEUR ) of NATO.
Life
Family
Stavridis grandfather was of Greek descent. Stavridis himself was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, and lived as a child for a time in Germany and Greece, as his father, an officer of the U.S. Marine Corps, was stationed in the local U.S. embassies.
Stavridis is married to Laura Hall and has two daughters. He speaks Spanish and French as foreign languages.
Military career
Stavridis graduated in 1976, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis from. He was trained as an officer for Überwasserseekriegführung and served on aircraft carriers, cruisers and destroyers.
It was founded in 1984 his doctorate in philosophy and earned a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He also graduated from the National War College in 1992.
From 1993 to 1995 Stavridis commanded the destroyer USS Barry (DDG -52) and was present in Haiti, Bosnia, and stationed in the Persian Gulf. In 1998, he was employed as an executive assistant to the Secretary of the Navy Richard J. Danzig, and also served as a strategist and planner advance in the rods of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In 1998 he commanded the Destroyer Squadron 21 from 2002 to 2004, he had command of the aircraft carrier battle group of the USS Enterprise ( CVN -65) and support case hostilities in operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Subsequently, he served in Washington, D.C. from July 2004 to August 2006 as Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. A post he gave in August 2006 to Lieutenant General Victor E. Renuart, Jr..
He then took over on 19 October 2006 by General Bantz J. Craddock command of the U.S. Southern Command in Miami, Florida and was among others also responsible for the Joint Task Force Guantanamo, the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base on the U.S. operates the detention center in Cuba.
Three years later, on 18 March 2009, Stavridis was proposed by U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates for the position of commander of the U.S. European Command, thereby ensuring the post of NATO Supreme Commander ( Supreme Allied Commander Europe). This nomination was confirmed on June 11 by the U.S. Senate. On 25 June 2009 Stavridis handed in Miami, Florida, in command of SOUTHCOM to General Douglas M. Fraser.
June 30, 2009 Stavridis finally took over in Stuttgart command of the U.S. European Command, two days later, on 2 July 2009, then the post of Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO. Stavridis was the first naval officer to hold the post and also took again a command from Bantz J. Craddock.
On May 6, 2013 Stavridis was appointed the 12th dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, a post he will take up in the summer. In addition, he is from July, also act as Chairman of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
