John F. Kelly (Marine)

John Francis Kelly ( born May 11, 1950 in Boston, Massachusetts) is a general of the United States Marine Corps ( USMC) and since November 19, 2012 Commander of U.S. Southern Command ( USSOUTHCOM ), a branches of the armed force- border regional command of the armed forces of the United States.

Education and Career

Kelly grew up in Boston and joined the Marine Corps in 1970, where he initially served as a sergeant in the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune (North Carolina). After completion of his studies at the University of Massachusetts in 1976 different uses, including as Platoonführer followed (again at Camp Lejeune ) and on different aircraft carriers.

Service in the rank of general

In March 2003, Kelly was promoted to brigadier general during a foreign assignment in Iraq and took over the following month in command of the newly formed "Task Force Tripoli ", whose job it was to secure the more northerly city of Tikrit after the fall of Baghdad.

He then served as assistant to the then Commandant of the Marine Corps, Michael Hagee before, under promotion to Major General, in July 2007 the command of the " I Marine Expeditionary Force ( Forward) " took over for a year in the Iraqi Al- Anbar; back in the United States between 2009 and 2011, he commanded the "Marine Forces Reserve" and the "Marine Forces North ," from March 2011, he was Senior Military Assistant in the Department of Defense.

In July 2012, it was announced that Kelly General Douglas M. Fraser to replace at the head of Southern Command. A post he finally stepped up to November 19; the capacities associated with the promotion to General.
