George W. Baxter

George White Baxter ( born January 7, 1855 in Hendersonville, North Carolina, † December 18, 1929 in Manhattan, New York ) was an American politician (Democratic Party).

Career

His family moved two years after his birth, to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he later attended the University of Tennessee. Then he went from 1873 to 1877 at the Military Academy at West Point. As a Second Lieutenant, he then served three years in the 3rd U.S. Cavalry. Then he left the military in 1881 and moved to Wyoming, where he followed the cattle.

President Grover Cleveland appointed him in 1886 to the Governor of Wyoming Territory. His oath of office he laid then on November 11, 1886, had held the office until December 20, 1886 held. He represented his country at the 1889 Constitutional Convention and failed a year later in his candidacy for the office of governor at the Republican Francis E. Warren. Baxter returned back to Knoxville in 1892, where he pursued banking and cotton shops.
