Nels H. Smith

Nels Hansen Smith ( born August 27, 1884 in Gayville, South Dakota, † July 5, 1976 in Spearfish, South Dakota ) was an American politician ( Republican), who was from 1939 to 1943 Governor of the State of Wyoming.

Career

Smith graduated in 1904 from the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor of Arts. Then he moved to Wyoming in 1907, where he pursued his brother on a ranch livestock. He was a member of the Wyoming Highway Commission and later the State Legislature. During his tenure as governor of Wyoming, he led a program that led to abolition of state property tax and promoted the construction of "farm - to-market" roads. After he was defeated in his re-election attempt for a second term, he returned to his ranch, where he continued to cattle breeding.

He was married to Marie Christensen and the couple had two children together.
