Alonzo M. Clark

Alonzo Monroe Clark ( born August 13, 1868 in Flint, Steuben County, Indiana, † October 12, 1952 in Thermopolis, Wyoming ) was an American politician ( Republican), who served from 1931 to 1933 as acting governor of the state of Wyoming.

Career

Clark graduated in 1898 at the Nebraska State Teachers College with a degree in education and worked as Superintendent of Schools of Dawes County, Nebraska, before he moved to Wyoming in 1901. He was twice elected Secretary of State and led after the death of Governor Frank C. Emerson into office on. During the Great Depression, he supported the position of President Herbert Hoover respect of state sovereignty. He also urged the cooperative marketing of agricultural products and the repeal of Prohibition. He also fought unsuccessfully for the eradication of the sale of crude oil from state of Wyoming.

With the Republican primaries in 1932 for the governorship he suffered a defeat and so he continued his tenure as Secretary of State continued that ended in 1935. He won in 1934 the Republican nomination for governor, but was defeated by Democratic challenger Leslie A. Miller. After that, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Representatives of the United States and in the U.S. Senate. Clark died in Thermopolis and was buried in Carlton (Nebraska ).
