Giarratana

Giarratana is a municipality in the province of Ragusa in the region of Sicily in Italy with 3124 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Giarratana located 21 kilometers north of Ragusa. The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture, cultivated corn and onions.

The neighboring municipalities are Buccheri (SR ), Buscemi (SR ), Licodia Euboea (CT ), Modica, Monterosso Almo, Ragusa and Vizzini (CT).

History

Originally the town was further north, it was called Cerretanum Jarratanae. Today we call this zone Terra Vecchia, this is near the Monte Lauro. After the 1693 earthquake, the present city was founded. Officially it was "born" on 26 August 1693, it had before it a bill of sale. First, the church was begun with the construction. In the north of the Basilica of Sant'Antonio Abate, in the south the church of San Bartolomeo and central location in the main Church.
