Giorgos Seferis

Giorgos Seferis (Greek Γιώργος Σεφέρης, actually Giorgos Stylianos Seferiadis; * 29 Februarjul / March 13 1900greg in Vourla today to İzmir Urla, .. † September 20, 1971 in Athens ) was a Greek writer and diplomat, the 1963 literature Nobel prize. He is regarded as the main initiator of the generation of the 30's that took the turn to modernism in poetry.

Life

Seferis is one of the most important poets and essayists of modern Greek language. He was born after that time still used by the Greek Church Julian Calendar on 29 February and according to modern bill on March 13, 1900 in Vourla, today's Turkish Urla. His father Stylianos Seferiadis was a lawyer, wrote poems and translated ancient and foreign poets. His mother's name was Despo (short for Despoina; born Tenekidi ), his two younger siblings Ioanna ( 1902 to 2000, she married the later Greek President Konstantinos Tsatsos ) and Angelos ( 1905-1950 ).

After the beginning of World War Seferis ' family in 1914 moved to Athens, where he attended a grammar school and a high school in 1917 was. Seferis studied from 1918 to 1924 law in Paris, in 1924 spent a year in England to improve his English skills, returned back to Greece in 1925 and entered the diplomatic service in 1926 in Greece. His first collection of poems turn appeared in 1931. According to his work from 1931 to 1934 in the Greek embassy in London, he represented his home from 1936 to 1938 as consul in Koritza (Albania). 1941 married Seferis after many years of relationship Maro Zannou and informed since that year until 1944, the fate of the Greek government in exile that led him, inter alia, to Crete, Egypt and South Africa.

After the liberation of Greece in 1944, he returned to Athens and from 1948 was again in diplomatic services; in particular, he was from 1953 to 1956 Ambassador in Lebanon and from 1957 to 1962 in the UK. During the military dictatorship of the Colonels 1967-1974 he published a dated on March 29, 1969 Statement against the regime. He spent withdrawn his last months of life. After the poet's death on September 20, 1971, his funeral into a protest against the dictatorship.

Work

Seferis 's literary work, which in 1963 became the first Greeks won him the Nobel Prize for literature, including poems, essays, a novel and diaries. Some of his poems from the 1930s, were set to music by Mikis Theodorakis (eg from the cycles Epiphany and mythology), which contributed to their political importance to the movement against the junta 's dictatorship ( 1967-74 ).
