Girefontaine

Girefontaine is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Girefontaine situated at an altitude of 277 m above sea level, 7 km west of Saint -Loup- sur- Semouse and about 30 km north of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the extreme north of the department, on a terrace west of the valley of the Ruisseau le Chanois, at the edge of the plateau of the Voge.

The area of ​​3.56 km ² municipal area comprises a section in the gently undulating countryside on the outskirts of the Voge. The eastern border is the Ruisseau le Chanois, which provides for drainage southeast to Planey. From this basin, the municipality's area extends westward across the country terrace of Girefontaine up on the adjacent hill of La Vangille. With 331 m find the highest mountains of Girefontaine is achieved. To the north- west of the municipality extends to the bottom Talniederung the Superbe. History

Since the Middle Ages Girefontaine formed an exclave of Barrois in the Franche-Comté. The local government had the lords of Saint- Loup, and later those of Fougerolles held. The place name derives from the Germanic personal name Gero and the French word fontaine (wells ). In 1569 the village was looted and burned by the soldiers of the Duke Wolfgang of Pfalz- Zweibrücken. Today Girefontaine is a member of the 20 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes des Belles Sources.

Attractions

Among the attractions of the place include a Calvaire, which is dated to the year 1615, and a late medieval fountain.

Population

With 47 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Girefontaine one of the smallest municipalities in the department of Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 111 people were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Girefontaine is still a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in town. Some employed persons are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes, but is easily accessible from the main road D417 which leads from Luxeuil -les- Bains to Bourbonne -les -Bains. Further road links exist with Jasney and Anjeux.
