Großlohra

Großlohra is a municipality in the district of Nordhausen in Thuringia within the administrative community Hainleite. It lies on the northern edge of the Hainleite, approximately 2 km from the main road 80 and the construction of the federal highway 38, and about 20 km from the district town of Nordhausen. Area attractions include the Lohra castle with its Romanesque double chapel and the Romanesque basilica St.Gangolf in Münchenlohra.

Geography

Großlohra lies on the northern edge of the western foothills of the ridge Hainleite. The Lohra castle itself is situated on a mountain ledge in about 300-400 m height. To the north the Hainleite falls off quickly in the direction of Wippertals, so that one of the castle in good weather has a broad view of the southern Harz up to the Brocken.

History

On the site of the present castle Lohra probably existed already attached to Germanic times plants. The present structure was built by the Earl of Lare ( Lohra ) in 11-12. Culture and sights

The Lohra castle as situated on a mountain spur investment can already be seen from several kilometers away. It is the largest castle in the western southern Harz. Noteworthy is the Romanesque double chapel with an original separation between upstairs and downstairs.
