Guglionesi

Guglionesi ( in the local dialect: Ujuniše or Uiniše ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 5489 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Campobasso in the Molise. The community is located about 44 kilometers northeast of Campobasso on the north bank of the Biferno.

History

The Osco - Samnite Frentanians a people settled in this area. It is probably in their ancient city Uscosium around today Guglionesi. For the Romans, the settlement was also important, so they must have had in the late 1st century BC, several thousand inhabitants. Usconium was destroyed by the Goths. The inhabitants fled to the mountains, where they founded the Pagus Collis Nisii or Collenisyus. 412 was from Colleniso Usconium a novelty. 801 reached the village to the Duke of Spoleto. 1496, the fortifications were razed by Charles VIII.
