Palata

Palata is a municipality of the province of Campobasso in the Italian region Molise with 1762 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Palata situated on a hill at 520 meters above sea level, about 50 km north of the provincial capital of Campobasso and 30 km southwest of the port city of Termoli.

Adjacent communities are Acquaviva Colle Croce, Guardialfiera, Guglionesi, Larino, Montecilfone, Monte di Bisaccia and Tavenna.

History

The place is mentioned in the 12th century as a fief of different families. At the beginning of the 16th century settled in Palata Slavs from Dalmatia. The language ( Moliseslawisch ) is extinct in Palata today.

Churches

  • Santa Maria La Nova - Three-nave parish church in the town center, built around 1531 by Dalmatian settlers.
  • Chiesa di San Rocco - church of the former monastery of San Francesco della Scarpa built to in 1526.
  • Chiesa Santa Giusta - Chapel few kilometers outside the village

  • Festa di Sant'Antonio - festival with procession of decorated bullock carts on June 13
  • Festa della Madonna del Carmelo - Marie for Thanksgiving procession on July 16
  • San Rocco - Feast of the local saint with a procession on August 16
