Mafalda (Molise)

Mafalda is a municipality with 1236 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Campobasso in the Italian region of Molise. The village is located about 180 kilometers east of Rome, 45 km north of Campobasso and 20 kilometers from the Adriatic coast.

The place is located in the Monti di Ferentani, a promontory of the Abruzzo above the limiting flux to the region of Abruzzo, the Trigno.

Mafalda was called until 1903 Ripalta sul Trigno. It was in honor of the birth of the daughter of King Victor Emmanuel III. Mafalda, who died in 1944 at the Buchenwald concentration camp, renamed.

The medieval village is grouped around the parish church of San Andrea Apostolo and Palazzo Juliani.

History

Mafalda probably goes back to an establishment of the Normans in the 12th century and belonged to the Norman noble family D ' Alitto. In the era of the reign of the House of Anjou over the Kingdom of Naples, the place was known as Trespaldum.

In the 15th century the place was uninhabited. In 1457 he came to the family D ' Eevee, the immigrants from the Balkans in the village now called Ripalta settled. But already in 1780 reported Giuseppe Maria Galanti in his description of the kingdom, the residents had lost their own language and speak bad Italian.

Beginning of the 17th century Ripalta was bought by Alfonso Piscicelli for 28,000 ducats and was again sold on after his death to the family of Caracciolo, who ruled until the end of the feudal over the place.
