Sepino

Sepino is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 2002 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Campobasso in Molise. The municipality is situated approximately 13 kilometers south-southwest of Campobasso on Tammaro and directly borders the province of Benevento (Campania ).

History

The Samnites founded here the city Saepinum, which was conquered 293 BC by the Romans. The city was abandoned in the beginning of the Middle Ages, for unknown reasons and founded until later. The ancient Saepinum was the seat of a bishop. What is known is only the bishop Proculeiano, who was present at a Roman synod of 500. Since 2009 the titular Sepino.

Traffic

Passing through the municipality, the Strada Statale 87 Sannitica of Benevento to Termoli. The train station of Sepino lies on the railway line Benevento - Campobasso.
