Guido De Padt

Guido De Padt (* May 23, 1954 in Geraardsbergen ) is a Belgian politician of the party Open Vlaamse en Democraten liberals (Open VLD). From 30 December 2008 to 17 July 2009, he held the office of the Belgian Minister of the Interior. Since then he has government commissioner responsible for internal audits of public companies.

Life

De Padt studied law and was for a long time worked as a lawyer until 2001 when he devoted himself full-time politics. His political career began in 1982 as a member of the Council of the Province of East Flanders and as a juror in Geraardsbergen. From 2000 to 2006 he was mayor of Geraardsbergen and then as Alderman for culture, tourism, library, archive and heritage as well as Chairman of the Public Social Assistance Centre. Since 2003, De Padt sat in the Chamber of Deputies, where he dealt in particular with the issues of road safety and mobility.

In the government's Van Rompuy De Padt took over as successor to his party colleague Patrick Dewael the Office of the Minister of the Interior. After the appointment of a new government on 17 July 2009, he was commissioned as a government commissioner to organize internal audits in public companies. He took this role in the government Leterme II. Since the federal elections of 2010, he shall sit as a co-opted senator.
