Jules de Burlet

Jules Philippe Marie de Burlet ( born April 10, 1844 in Ixelles / Elsene, † March 1, 1897 in Nivelles ) was a Belgian Catholic politician and Prime Minister.

Studies and professional activities

After studying law and the promotion of Doctor iuris, he worked as an attorney in Nivelles.

Political career

De Burlet began his political career in 1872 with the election of the mayor of Nivelles. This office he held position until 1891.

From 1884 to 1888 and from 1892 to 1894 he was a member of the House of Representatives and represented the interests of the Katholieke there Partij the district of Nivelles. Subsequently, he was until 1896 Senator of Walloon Brabant.

In 1891 he was appointed by Prime Minister Auguste Beernaert the Interior. This office he retained initially also held when he was appointed to succeed Beernaert as Prime Minister on 26 March 1894. In 1895 he handed the office of Interior Minister Frans Schollaert and took over instead to the end of his reign, on 25 February 1896, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

1896 was awarded to him for his services the honorary title of Minister of State. From 1896 to 1897 he was ambassador to Portugal.
