Gus Macdonald

Angus " Gus" John Macdonald, Baron Macdonald of Tradeston, of Tradeston in the City of Glasgow CBE PC ( born August 20, 1940 in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, Scotland ) is a British journalist, managers in the media industry and Labour Party politician, the peer is a life member of the House of Lords since 1998.

Life

Journalist, media manager and high school teachers

After education at Allan Glen 's School in Glasgow Macdonald graduated in 1956 trained as a marine engineer and was then worked in this profession until 1963 before he worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper The Scotsman 1965-1967. Having to 1985 as a manager and presenter for Granada Television Television channel was active from 1967, he moved in 1986 to the Scottish Media Group plc, where he was first and then program director between 1990 and 1996 Managing Director and subsequently from 1996 to 1997 Chairman of the Board. By Letters Patent dated 2 October 1998 Macdonald was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Macdonald of Tradeston, of Tradeston in the City of Glasgow to the peerage. Shortly afterwards, was his introduction ( Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords. In the upper house he belongs to the Group of the Labour Party.

Shortly thereafter, he became in 1998 Minister for Enterprise and Industry in the Ministry of belonging to Scotland Scottish Office. After its dissolution Lord Macdonald was on 29 July 1999 as the successor to Helen Liddell Minister of State for Transport for the Minister for the Environment, Transport and the Regions. At the same time he was appointed Privy Councillor in 1999 and replaced on June 8, 2001 by John Spellar as Minister of Transport. Subsequently, he was on 11 June 2001 by Prime Minister Tony Blair as the successor of Mo Mowlam Minister for the Cabinet Office ( Cabinet Office ) and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ( Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster) and appointed these roles until his replacement by Douglas Alexander on June 13, 2003.

After leaving the government, he was a senior consultant in 2004, Macquarie Bank and since 2009 is also a board member of the energy supply company ScottishPower. Furthermore, there was Lord Macdonald 2006-2001 Member of the Council and the Committee of the University of Sussex and 2007-2012 Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University.

Lord Macdonald were also honorary doctorates from the University of Stirling, Edinburgh Napier University, the Robert Gordon University, University of Glasgow and the University of Lincoln.
