Harvie S

Harvie Swartz ( Harvie S, born 6 December 1948 in Chelsea / Massachusetts) is an American jazz bassist.

Life and work

Swartz studied piano and composition at the Berklee College of Music before moving at the age of 19 years for bass and worked with musicians like Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Mose Allison and Chris Connor. In 1973 he went to New York, where he worked with Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Gil Evans, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, John Abercrombie, and occurred belonged 1974-1976 Barry Miles ' group Silverlight.

In the second half of the seventies, he was several times with David Friedman's group Double Image on a European tour and was from 1979 to 1981 a member of Steve Kuhn's quartet. After a collaboration with Stan Getz in 1980 he published his first album as a leader, the ten others followed. In addition, he contributed to recordings by John Abercrombie, Mick Goodrick and Mike Stern.

In the 1990s, he traveled to Cuba to study Afro-Cuban and Latin American music and founded the group Eye Contact, with which he appeared at festivals and in 1999 the album Havana Manana recorded. In addition, Swartz worked with Juan Carlos Formells and Virginia Mayhew's band, with Karl Berger, Paul Motian, with Ed Sarath and with Sheila Jordan (including Duo CD Old Time Feeling, 1982).

Since 1983, Swartz Jazz Bass teaches at the Manhattan School of Music; he gave guest lectures at the Cologne University of Music, McGill University, the Berklee College of Music, the Eastman School of Music, and others.
