Henry Newton ( born February 18, 1944 in Nottingham ) is a former English footballer. He celebrated his biggest success in the Football League First Division 1974/75 when he won the English championship with Derby County.

Playing career

Nottingham Forest

Newton began his career with his hometown club Nottingham Forest in the Football League First Division 1963/64, and ended his first season on the thirteenth place in the standings. Much more successful was the season 1964/65 the Forest to fifth place led. A further increase experienced this result in the First Division 1966/67, when Newton was runner-up with his teammates behind Manchester United to Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law. Through this placement Nottingham reached the Fairs' Cup 1967/68 and failed there after a Erstrundenerfolg over Eintracht Frankfurt in the second round at FC Zurich. In the following three years, the team was unable to repeat this good result and Newton changed during the 1970/71 season for £ 115,000 to the reigning English champions Everton.

Everton FC

Due to the success in the Football League First Division 1969/70 Everton took the European Cup of Champions part 1970/71 and switched there in the second round of the German champions Borussia Moenchengladbach on penalties from. In the quarterfinals, however, was the unexpected off against the Greek champions Panathinaikos Athens. The team of coach Harry Catterick could not confirm last year's good results in the 1970/71 season and finished a disappointing fourteenth place in the table. The team of Newton was also found in the following two years only in the lower third of the table again, before he moved in September 1973 for £ 110, 000 to Derby County.

Derby County

Derby had surprisingly won the First Division in 1971/72 with coach Brian Clough, the English championship and was recruited to the semifinals of the European Champions' Cup 1972/73. The start of the season in the 1973/74 season was less successful with the Board and the estranged Brian Clough was sacked on 15 October 1973. With his successor Dave Mackay County reached number 3 in the championship and moved in the following year a first knockout round of the UEFA Cup 1974/75, before the off was. For Newton succeeded with his teammates to Archie Gemmill, Colin Todd and Bruce Rioch the title win in the Football League First Division 1974/75. This success in the European Cup of Champions 1975/76 allowed to start, Derby failed in the second round after a 4-1 home victory in the second leg with 1:5 after extra time at Real Madrid. After 4th place in the 1975/76 season and the early exit in the UEFA Cup 1976/77 Newton moved to Walsall FC in 1977 where she completed a year later with 34 years of his playing career.
