Hohhot (Mongolian ᠬ ᠥ ᠬ ᠡ ᠬ ᠣ ᠲ ᠠ, Chinese呼和浩特, Pinyin Huhehaote ) is the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China. The city's name is Mongolian and means Blue City; However, the Chinese translation (青城= " blue / green / azure / Pure City " ) also allows for other colors, so the partially used label Green city declared by the Chinese.

The administrative area of the city of Hohhot has a total area of 17,271 km ² and 2.27 million inhabitants ( end of 2009). This gives a population density of 124 inhabitants per km ².

Administrative Divisions

At county level, Hohhot consists of four city districts, four counties and a banner together. These are:

Municipality Huimin (回民区= "district of the Hui " ), 175 km ², 220,000 inhabitants;
City Xincheng District (新城区= "New Town" ), 700 km ², 320,000 inhabitants;
Municipality Yuquan (玉泉区= " Jadequelle " ), 213 km ², 190,000 inhabitants;
Municipality Saihan (赛罕区), 1013 km ², 360,000 inhabitants;
Circle Togtoh (托克托县), 1313 km ², 200,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Shuanghe (双河镇);
Circle Wuchuan (武川县), 4885 km ², 170,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Hoho ereg (可可以力更镇);
Circle Horinger (和林格尔县), 3401 km ², 190,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇);
Circle Qingshuihe (清水河县), 2859 km ², 140,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇);
Left Tumed banner (土默特左旗), 2712 km ², 350,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Qasq (察素齐镇).

History

The city was founded around 1580 by Altan Khan, and was later the capital of the Chinese province Suiyuan. The Chinese called them to 1954 Guisui (归绥Guīsuī ), an acronym from the initial characters of the two parts of the city Guihua (归化) and Suiyuan (绥远) composed.
