Hohhot (Mongolian ᠬ ᠥ ᠬ ᠡ ᠬ ᠣ ᠲ ᠠ, Chinese呼和浩特, Pinyin Huhehaote ) is the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China. The city's name is Mongolian and means Blue City; However, the Chinese translation (青城= " blue / green / azure / Pure City " ) also allows for other colors, so the partially used label Green city declared by the Chinese.

The administrative area of the city of Hohhot has a total area of ​​17,271 km ² and 2.27 million inhabitants ( end of 2009). This gives a population density of 124 inhabitants per km ².

History

The city was founded around 1580 by Altan Khan, and was later the capital of the Chinese province Suiyuan. The Chinese called them to 1954 Guisui (归绥Guīsuī ), an acronym from the initial characters of the two parts of the city Guihua (归 化) and Suiyuan (绥远) composed.
