Jan Szczepański (boxer)

January Antoni Szczepanski ( born November 20, 1939 in Malecz ) is a retired Polish boxer. He was Olympic champion in Munich in 1972 and European champion in 1971 in Belgrade at lightweight.

Career

January Szczepańskis career as a boxer should be divided into two phases: in the phase of before 1964 and in the phase of post-1968 This is unusual, but as unusual was the career of Jan Szczepanski. . It began in 1955, when the apprentice mechanic began boxing at the boxing club in Tomaszow Mazowiecki. His first coach was M. Kraszewski. He relatively quickly achieved success at the national level. In 1958 he went to the Polish army and joined the Army Sports Club Legia Warsaw, where he was coached by Marian Twardowski.

In 1958 he recorded his first major success when he placed 3rd at the Polish Championship in the lightweight. After a stagnation in the years 1959 and 1960 he reached the final again in 1961 the Polish Championship in which he, however, against Antoni Dasal by techn. KO was defeated in the 3rd round. In total he had in this championship but the Polish national team coach Feliks tribe convinced, so he was employed at the European Championships the same year in Belgrade's lightweight. But in Belgrade, he met the same in the first round to the Soviet champion Gennady Kakoschkin, against whom he defeated on points and was eliminated.

1962 and 1963 January Szczepanski Polish champion at lightweight. He defeated it in the final battle Ryszard Dudczak and Wlodzimierz Caruk. In 1963 he celebrated yet another remarkable success. He won at the 3rd Army championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact in Łódź ( SKDA Championship ) the featherweight title, defeating it none other than Vladimir Safronov from the Soviet Union, the Olympic champion from 1956.

Towards the end of 1963 January Szczepanski was arrested. He was noticed for alcohol and drug abuse and had become delinquent. He was sentenced to several years in prison. He was released on an amnesty from prison in 1968 and began again with the boxes at Legia Warsaw. He had overcome his problems and had soon reached his former boxing skills level again.

As early as 1969 he was Polish champion at lightweight again and this item also won again in 1970. In 1971, he achieved his third title at the Polish Championship in a row. He was then again used in international competitions, though he was already 32 years old. In 1971 he competed at the European Championships in Madrid in lightweight. With five victories he won there, to the surprise of all experts consider the European title. In this championship, he defeated among others the outstanding boxer Seyfi Tatar from Turkey, Nikolay Gromov from the Soviet Union and in the final Antoniu Vasile from Romania.

After this success, he was able to prepare in 1972 specifically for the Olympic Games in Munich. He was therefore in Munich back in top form, defeating in succession Kasmiro Marchlo from Sudan, James Busceme from the United States and Charles Nash from Ireland. In the semifinals he was lucky because he came to a noncombat victory over the injured Samuael Mbugua from Kenya and in the final battle he won over the Hungarian László Orbán sure 5-0 judges votes. He crowned his eventful career with the Olympic victory.

In 1973 January Szczepanski denied some countries fights, but came back soon thereafter. In his career, he had played a total of 290 fights, of which he won 251.

He completed his training coaches and was a coach at Polonii Warsaw and KSZO Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. In 1977 he tried his hand along with his former Boxkameraden Jerzy Kulej also as a film actor in a film by the renowned director Marek Piwowski.
