Jeannette Island

The Jeannette Island (Russian остров Жаннетты ) is a small island in the Arctic Ocean. It is located about 600 kilometers north of the northern coast of East Siberia and belongs to the archipelago of the De Long Islands, part of the New Siberian Islands. The island was discovered on May 16, 1881 by a U.S. Arctic expedition aboard the USS Jeannette. You island received the name of Expeditionssschiffs, the archipelago of the expedition leader George W. DeLong.

Jeannette brought the ship, whose name it bears, and its crew out of luck. Shortly after the discovery of the island and its neighbor, Henrietta Island, the sailing ship on June 13, 1881, crushed by ice and sank.

Jeannette is uninhabited and only 3.3 km ², the second smallest of the New Siberian Islands. The highest point is at least 351 feet high. The island consists mostly of sandstone and is covered by glaciers and firn.
