Jeonju

Jeonju ( Jeonju -si ) is the capital of Jeollabuk-do Province in South Korea. It is located about 230 km south of Seoul, and is a tourist center, famous for its food, historic buildings, sports activities and some festivals. During the FIFA World Cup 2002, there were three games held in Jeonju.

History

Jeonju looks back on a long history. In the kingdom of Baekje was under the name Wansan been a center of the region. During the period of Unified Silla in 892 military leader Gyeon Hwon rebelled against the increasingly ineffective Silla Dynasty and established the Late Baekje Kingdom. However, before he could gain control over the entire Korean Peninsula, his troops were defeated by the army of Goryeo. Jeonju is also the hometown of Jeonju Yi family, who founded the Joseon Dynasty.

Culture
