Johan Otto von Spreckelsen

Johan Otto von Spreckelsen ( * 4 May 1929 in Viborg, † March 15, 1987 in Hørsholm ) was a Danish architect and university professor. He passed through the construction of the Grande Arche to celebrity, to the west of Paris on the "King axis " ( Axe historique ) located business district of La Défense gave new significance.

Life and work

Johan Otto von Spreckelsen was born in Viborg as the son of Books auditor and local historian Otto von Spreckelsen and his wife Maria Antonie born of Taborsky. The mother was a native Hungarian. The family was Catholic. The name comes from Dithmar.

Johan Otto von Spreckelsen received his diploma in 1953 at the Royal Art Academy, and in 1958 founded his own architectural office. He was the representative of Unesco at the Technical University of the Middle East, shortly METU, Ankara (1960-1962), Honorary Professor at the University of Ohio ( 1963 ) and finally returned in 1978 as a professor at the Art Academy in Copenhagen, where he for the specialist architecture was responsible.

Spreckelsen worked intensively with the study of churches and mosques and historical exploration of the works of Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto and other architects of the 20th century.

For the realization of the Grande Arche, he worked with the French architect Paul Andreu. Johan Otto von Spreckelsen died in 1987 at the age of 57 years, two years before the completion of the Grande Arche. After Spreckelsens death Andreu completed the construction.
