John Rutherfoord

John Rutherfoord ( born December 8, 1792 in Richmond, Virginia; † August 3, 1866 ) was an American politician and from 1841 to 1842 Governor of Virginia.

Career

John Rutherfoord first attended Princeton University. He then studied law. Later he became president of the Mutual Assurance Society, the first insurance company in Virginia. Between 1826 and 1834 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Virginia. Between 1839 and 1841 he was a member of the Virginia Council of State, now the Senate of Virginia, as its chairman, he was 1841. In this capacity, he succeeded Governor John M. Patton, who had taken over this office from the retiring Thomas Walker Gilmer and exercised for twelve days. Rutherfoord exercised the office of governor of Virginia between March 31, 1841 to March 31, 1842 from an interim basis. Then John Munford Gregory finished until January 1, 1843 Gilmers tenure. John Rutherfoord was a member of the Whig party. After the end of his governorship, he retired to private life and died on 3 August 1866. Together with his wife Anne Coles he had a child.
