The Ballivián Province (complete: Provincia del General José Ballivián Segurola ) is a province in the western part of the department of Beni in the South American Andes State of Bolivia. She bears her name in honor of President José Ballivián ( 1805-1852 ).

Location

The province is one of eight provinces in the department of Beni. It is bounded on the northwest by the Pando department, on the west by the department of La Paz, on the south by the province Moxos, on the east by the province Yacuma, and to the north by the province Vaca Díez.

The province extends between 12 ° 00 'and 15 ° 42' south latitude and 66 ° 17 ' and 67 ° 32 ' west longitude, their extent from west to east is up to 140 kilometers from north to south 550 km.

Population

The population of the province Ballivián has risen in the past two decades to nearly twice:

45.6 percent of the population are younger than 15 years, the literacy rate in the province is 80.0 percent.

95.0 percent of the population speaking Spanish, 6.8 percent Aymara, Quechua 6.5 percent, and 9.3 percent other indigenous languages. (1992)

68.1 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 47.9 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

82.5 percent of the population are Catholics, 12.8 percent are Protestant (1992).

Structure

The Ballivián province is divided into the following four municipios:

  • Municipio Reyes ( 11,870 km ²) in the northwestern part of the province - 16 468 inhabitants - 1.4 inhabitants / km ²
  • Municipality Rurrenabaque ( 2820 km ²) in the southwestern part of the province - 16,193 inhabitants - 5.7 inhabitants / km ²
  • The municipality of San Borja ( 8542 km ²) in the southeastern part of the province - 44,925 inhabitants - 5.3 inhabitants / km ²
  • Municipality of Santa Rosa de Yacuma ( 9706 km ²) in the northeastern part of the province - 10,456 inhabitants - 1.1 inhabitants / km ²
