José María Avilés (also: Avilez ) is a province in the western part of the department of Tarija in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Aviles Province is one of six provinces in the department of Tarija. It lies between 21 ° 28 'and 22 ° 05' south latitude and between 64 ° 29 ' and 65 ° 25 ' west longitude.

The province is bordered on the north by the province Eustaquio Méndez, to the west by the department of Potosí, to the south by the Republic of Argentina, in the southeast of the province Aniceto Arce, and in the north east of the province of Cercado.

The province extends over a length of 85 kilometers in north-south direction and 115 km in east-west direction.

Population

The population of the province Avilés has risen in the past two decades by about a quarter:

47.6 percent of the population are younger than 15 years.

98.9 percent of the population speaking Spanish, 2.4 percent Quechua, Aymara and 0.2 percent.

81.6 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 82.9 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

77.0 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 0.1 percent in mining, 3.7 percent in industry, 19.2 percent in services ( 2001).

93.9 percent of the population are Catholics, 4.6 percent are Protestant (1992).

Structure

The province is divided into the following two municipios ( counties ):

  • Municipio Uriondo (810 km ²) in the eastern part of the province - 13,454 inhabitants - 16.6 inhabitants / km ²
  • Municipio Yunchará ( 1827 km ²) in the western part of the province - 5,472 inhabitants - 3.0 inhabitants / km ²
