Life

Childhood and youth

Judy Mowatt grew up on the island of Jamaica in the capital, Kingston. As a girl she sang in the church choir and when she was 14 years old, she became in 1966 a member of the Dance Squad that toured the Caribbean. After a few years were Mowatt and two of her friends, Beryl Lawson and Merle Clemonson, in a dance group. They wanted to try to sing professionally, and so they formed soon after the trio The Gaylettes.

An early form of reggae, the so-called early reggae had begun, but the trio was more influenced by American soul and rhythm and blues. The band got a record deal at Motown and was successful.
