Jürgen Simon

Jürgen Simon ( born January 10, 1938 in Gera, † 26 October 2003 in Quirla ) was a racing driver from the GDR. In 1960, he won an Olympic silver medal in the tandem race.

Sports career

Jürgen Simon began his career with BSG Gera unit. His first East German championship titles won Simon together with Jochen Schmidt in 1954 in a two - team race for more BSG Einheit Berlin Bear. From 1955 started Jürgen Simon for the SC unit in Berlin and trained with Gerhard Gallinge, where he lived in his first years in Berlin also sublet. 1955, 1956 and 1961 won Jürgen Simon in the GDR championships in Radsprint, between twice won the SC Dynamo Berlin Lothar Stäber twice and Karl- Heinz Peter from SC Unit Berlin.

At GDR Cycling Championships 1960 Jürgen Simon won the tandem driving together with Konrad Irmschler the SC Dynamo before Karl -Heinz Peter and Lothar Stäber. For the all-German team and the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, Simon and Stäber qualified together. In Rome, the two reached the final, where they lost against the Italians Giuseppe Beghetto and Sergio Bianchetto.

The following year, Stäber won with his new partner Senger the GDR Champion title before Simon and Irmschler. After Simon finished in 1962 together with Hans -Jürgen Clunkers only the third place in the East German championships, appeared again in 1963 Irmschler and Simon together on and won after 1960 their second championship title.

Jürgen Simon had first learned druggist to take over the parental drug in Gera. After the end of his athletic career, he remained in Berlin, and built him a taxi operation.
