Kawit, Cavite

Kawit ( officially: Municipality of Kawit, formerly Cavite El Viejo; Filipino: Bayan ng Kawit ) is a Philippine municipality in the province of Cavite.

Kawit is the birthplace of Emilio Aguinaldo, the president of the first Philippine Republic in Kawit also the Aguinaldo Shrine is located. His cousin Baldomero Aguinaldo was, who was also born in Kawit.

On June 12, 1898 Aguinaldo proclaimed in Kawit independence of the Philippines from Spain.

History

The name is derived from the Tagalog word Kawit Kawit (German: hook ) from. The meaning of the name is ambiguous. On one hand, he points to the location Kawits at the base of a peninsula with the shape of a hook that protrudes into the Manila Bay and is situated on the Cavite City. Kawit was a prosperous settlement before the arrival of the Spaniards and the other hand was the first anchorage of the Spaniards in the province of Cavite, where the missionary work throughout the province took its starting point.

According to legend, the name came as a result of a misunderstanding. A Spanish visitor inquired of a local blacksmith by the name of the village. The blacksmith, who was busy on his anvil to forge a piece of metal that had the shape of a hook ( Kawit ), hesitated to answer, because he did not understand what the stranger asked. The blacksmith, however, was put under pressure to respond. This thought, the stranger wanted to know what he's doing and simply replied " Kawit ". The Spaniard went on, muttering the word Kawit. Over time, evolved from Kawit cawite and finally cavite.

For a long time the place to distinguish it from Cavite la Punta or Cavite el Puerto, commercial port and naval base (now Cavite City ) Cavite el Viejo (Old Cavite ) was called. Many Spanish sailors on shore leave were developed where a red-light district in the sequence to Cavite el Viejo.

To Cavite el Viejo included the present townships Kawit, Cavite la Punta (now Cavite City ), Noveleta ( by the Spaniards Tierra Alta called ) and Imus. Gradually, these districts were independent municipalities.

Mayor Reynaldo Aguinaldo of Kawit is, the ( vice mayor ) is elected to the office of Mayor on 17 May 2007 after three terms as vice mayor. Reynaldo Aguinaldo is a descendant of Emilio Aguinaldo, the first president of the Philippines.
