The Kidman Way is an important main road through the center of the Australian state of New South Wales. It connects the Matilda Highway and the Mitchell Highway in Barringun on the border to Queensland with the Newell Highway north of Jerilderie.

Origin of the name

The highway was named after Sir Sidney Kidman, the Australian "mad king" and philanthropist named. Kidman had a large number of cattle stations on this road, many of which still belong to his descendants.

Course

The Kidman Way begins at the border wipe Queensland and New South Wales in Barringun on the Warrego River. He is the sequel to the south of the Matilda Highway dar. Together with the Mitchell Highway ( A71/R71 ) it runs the first 136 km south to the Darling River in Bourke, where the Kamilaroi Highway ( S29) ends.

The Kidman Way leads from there directly to the south, while the Mitchell Highway turns to the southeast. After another 161 km through flat pastureland Cobar is reached. There, the Kidman Way crosses the Barrier Highway (R32 ) and performs a further 220 km to the south before he meets the Lachlan River and the Lachlan Valley Way. With this he draws together 35 km to the south-west to the town of Hillston. There, the Lachlan Valley Way leads on to the southwest, while the Kidman Way in a wide arc across the south to south-east is 110 km from Griffith runs. Halfway he will cross through the Mid- Western Highway (R24 ). In Griffith the Kidman Way meets the Burley Griffin Way ( S94 )

From Griffith from the Kidman Way leads again to the south and crosses 38 km of the Murrumbidgee River and the Sturt Highway ( N20) in the small town of Darlington Point. The last 79 km it performs the Riverina further south and ends 15km north of Jerilderie on the Newell Highway ( N39 ), about 60 km north of the Murray River and the border with Victoria.

Road conditions and significance

The Kidman Way is expanded and paved two-lane on the entire length. So he can give motorists who do not have a vehicle with all-wheel drive, a good insight into the Australian outback.

Together with the Matilda Highway, which crosses Queensland up to Normanton on the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Kidman Way is an important route for the transport of animals from pastures in western Queensland and in central New South Wales to markets and ports in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
