The Sturt Highway is a highway in southeastern Australia. It connects the Hume Highway south east of Wagga Wagga with the Main North Road, Gawler and runs in an east -west direction of New South Wales through Victoria to South Australia. It is an important part of the direct road link between Sydney and Adelaide.

Is named the Sturt Highway to the explorer Charles Sturt. Not to be confused is the Sturt Highway to the Stuart Highway, which runs between Adelaide and Darwin.

Course

New South Wales

The Sturt Highway begins about eight kilometers north of Tarcutta at a branch of the Hume Highway ( N31 ​​), about 400 km south-west of Sydney. The Hume Highway is the main road connecting the cities of Sydney and Melbourne.

The road starts its way to the west and reaches 45 km from the city of Wagga Wagga. This is the largest inland city of New South Wales. In Wagga Wagga the Olympic Highway ( R41) crosses in a north-south direction.

95 km to the northwest lies Narrandera, the nearest large city. In Narrandera the Newell Highway ( N39 ) crosses in a north-south direction. Narrandera is known as the center of an agricultural high-yielding area, which was created by large-scale irrigation. Today, in addition to the traditional cultivation of grain and sheep farming and citrus fruits and wine can be grown successfully.

An additional 170 km towards the west lies Hay. In Hay meet like each other several major highways. So crosses in a north-south direction of the Cobb Highway ( R75 ), which runs from Wilcannia in upstate Echuca on the border between New South Wales and Victoria. In addition, scores from Bathurst towards the north east of the Mid Western Highway ( R24) in Hay on the Sturt Highway.

About 210 km to the west of the Sturt Highway leads through Euston. Euston offers over a bridge over the Murray River port after Robinvale, the northern terminus of the Murray Valley Highway ( B400 ) represents.

With Buronga the last town is reached in New South Wales before the Sturt Highway crosses the border into Victoria to a further 80 km. From Broken Hill to the north of Silver City Highway ( B79 ) leads to Buronga. Near the city's first wind power plant to be built in Australia, but has not yet been started construction.

Victoria

After the Sturt Highway crosses the Murray River, it performs Mildura, the only major town in Victoria, who happens to the highway. Mildura is the center of the Sunraysia region, a region in which many citrus fruits and grapes are grown. Just outside of Mildura branches of the Calder Highway ( A79 ) from southbound. This leads via Bendigo to Melbourne.

From Mildura from the Sturt Highway runs about 120 km to the west until it reaches the border between Victoria and South Australia.

South Australia

After the Sturt Highway crosses the border into South Australia, reaching the first large town Renmark. The city was the first of Europeans established settlement on the course of the Murray River.

After a further 60 km towards the west the town of Waikerie is reached. There, the Murray River Queen paddle steamer moored. In the town of Gawler about 40 km northeast of the state capital Adelaide, the Sturt Highway meets the Main North Road (B19 / A32 ). As Gawler bypass it leads around to the west around the city. There, the Northern Expressway ( NM20 ) branches off to the west, leading to the Princes Highway ( NA1 ) west of Adelaide. In the Sturt Highway Evanston ends at the Main North Road ( A52 ) which leads to Adelaide North.
