The Cobb Highway is a state highway in the west of the Australian state of New South Wales. It connects the Barrier Highway south of Wilcannia with the Murray Valley Highway and the Northern Highway in Moama / Echuca.

Course

The highway begins 20 km south of the town of Wilcannia on the Darling River, where it branches off from the Barrier Highway ( R32), which turns thence east to south - southeast. The He continues on his way through Ivanhoe and turns after crossing the Lachlan River to the south.

In Hay he takes the coming of the East Mid- Western Highway on (R24 ) and crosses the Sturt Highway ( N20) and the Murrumbidgee River. In Deniliquin the Cobb Highway takes the coming of Eastern Riverina Highway ( R58 ) that crosses the Edward River and follow it upstream to the south. In Moama it reaches the Murray River and crossed it and thus the border into Victoria. On the south bank of the river he meets in Echuca on the Murray Valley Highway ( B400 ) and the Northern Highway ( B75 ) and ends.

The main road runs to the north by the semi-desert south of the Darling River, is then grown by open grassland, and finally, in the Riverina, through farming country, on the grain.

History

The Cobb Highway was named after the operator of several stagecoach lines in the second half of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century, Cobb and Co., named. He follows the path of the old stagecoach route through the Riverina.

In the 1930s, today's Cobb Highway was proclaimed as part of the state road 21 to the included the lying north of Wilcannia road to White Cliffs, Tibooburra and Warri Gate on the Queensland border. On February 9, 1945, the highways were numbered in this area only and created the Cobb Highway in memory of former stagecoach line operator.

1954 received the Cobb Highway in New South Wales and the Northern Highway in Victoria numbering 75 National Road

In May 1969, a new bridge over the Edward River at Deniliquin was a replacement for the old wooden bridge dating from 1895. In June 1973, the old bridge over the Murrumbidgee River at Hay ( drawbridge, built in 1874) was replaced with a new one.

The Long Paddock Project

The Cobb Highway is part of a very important network of cattle drive routes through New South Wales. On this highway a larger tourism initiative called The Long Paddock, which was developed by the Local Government Areas along the route, Murray Shire, Deniliquin Council, Conargo Shire, Hay Shire and Central Darling Shire focuses. The project aims to support the communities along the Cobb Highway through a dynamic heritage route. It uses the universal theme of transport, the historical aspects, as well as creative interpretation and the local environmental protection included to connect the communities along Highway together.

Road conditions and speed limits

The first 50 miles from Wilcannia is paved two-lane road. From there it leads to a dirt road about 10 km north of Ivanhoe. From there it is paved to the end again in Echuca.

With the exception of three short sections the speed limit is 100 km / h On a stretch of Ivanhoe to south of Mossgiel another piece of Booligal on Lachlan River to Hay, and finally the route from Hay to 40 km north of Deniliquin is the speed limit at 110 km / h

The Cobb Highway is one of the most remote and probably one of the least traveled highways in New South Wales.
