The Calder Highway is a 448 km long highway in Victoria, Australia. It connects Ravenswood South near Melbourne Mildura in the north border with New South Wales. From here, the Calder Highway continues to Broken Hill, Tibooburra and the border between New South Wales and Queensland, but under the name Silver City Highway.

History

The street was named after William Calder. He was from 1913 to 1928 Chairman of the Roads Authority Victoria, formerly known as Country Roads Board, now known as VicRoads.

Originally wore the Highway number 79 was, however, with the transition to alphanumeric naming system in the late 1990s, for and as such is marked by a majority of the length.

Course

South of the border of Victoria / New South Wales, the highway is a simple road with one lane in each direction. It passes through the north-west Victoria from Abbotsford Bridge over the Murray River, Merbein on through the largest city in the northwest, Mildura. Here the Calder Highway crosses the Sturt Highway, about which one can reach the two main cities in the West and in the East Adelaide Sydney. Next to the south it crosses the Mallee Highway at Ouyen and runs from here southeast to Bendigo. The Calder Alternate Highway, branches at Ravenswood and leads around the urban area of ​​Bendigo, until it empties in the west of Marong Bendigo back to the original route. From here to the end, at the intersection with the Tullamarine Freeway in Melbourne the Calder Highway is mostly four lanes.
