Konak (in German Residenz) is a district in the Turkish province of Izmir and at the same time a municipality of Büyükşehir Belediyesi ( city municipality ) Izmir. The name comes from the Konak government buildings ( Hükümet Konağı ), which was built 1868-1872, from.

Konak forms with 113 districts the center of the city of Izmir, the ancient Smyrna. It is located on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Izmir ( Izmir Körfezi ) and is bordered to the west by Balçova, to the south Karabağlar, on the southeast by Buca, Bornova to the east and to the north by Bayraklı. In Konak, the seat of the provincial governor is ( Vali ).

Attractions

To the west on the coast of the district of Alsancak is the called Kordon beach promenade, the Atatürk Caddesi. In the south of the district, which coincides approximately with the ancient core of Smyrna, the former Acropolis hill Pagos is the fortress Kadifekale. About one kilometer north- west of it the remains of the Agora of ancient Smyrna are seen. In the western district of Karataş is the historic 1907 -built elevator Asansör connecting the coast with the overlying hill. On the central Konak Square is also the emblem of the city, the Clock Tower ( Saat 's Tower ). This tower was built in 1901 and the movement was a gift of the then German Emperor Wilhelm II.
