Menemen

Menemen is a town and a district in the Turkish province of Izmir and at the same time a municipality of Büyükşehir Belediyesi ( city municipality ) Izmir. The city is located about 20 kilometers northwest from the center of the provincial capital of Izmir.

The district is located in the northern center of the province. It is bordered to the northwest by Foça and Aliağa, on the east by the province of Manisa and on the south by Bornova, Karşıyaka and Çiğli. The western boundary is the coast of the Gulf of Izmir ( Izmir Körfezi ). There are large salt mining areas where many birds, especially flamingos breed. The area is called the bird of paradise ( İzmir Kuş Cenneti ) and runs southeast to in the county Çiğli. The city lies on the left bank of the menemen Gediz River.

History

Menemen is first mentioned in the 13th or 14th century by Georgios Pachymeres who writes that the Tourkoi were drawn kampos in the Mainomenou what Aschikpaschazade in his historical work with menemen Owasi, ie level of menemen translated. The area was under saruchanidischer rule, until it came to the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Murad I ( 1319-1389 ). Until the population exchange after the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923 lived in the city mostly Greeks ( 4,683 Greeks, 3,606 Muslims ), while in the district of the Muslims were in the majority ( 17,261 Muslims, 7,195 Greeks ).

Known in the Republic was the place than here, the Turkish teachers and Mustafa Fehmi Kubilay reserve officer was murdered by Islamic fanatics, what remained as Kubilay event or menemen event in the collective memory of society.

Attractions

In the city of menemen the Ottoman complex to the caravanserai Taşhan is from the 16th/17th. Century with bedesten, tombs and two mosques.
