Krasny Kholm, Krasnokholmsky District, Tver Oblast

Krasny Chelm (Russian Красный Холм ) is a town in Tver Oblast (Russia) with 5608 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Mologaniederung about 175 kilometers northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Tver to the river Neledina and Mogocha in the river system of the Volga.

Krasny Chelm is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city lies on the built 1899-1926 railway from Moscow Sawjolowo - Sonkowo - Wessjegonsk ( kilometer 294 ).

History

The place was in 1518 as a village Spas na Cholmu (ie Saviour ( church ) on the hill) first documented. Until 1764 the village was owned by the nearby Nicholas Anthony's monastery. At the beginning of the 17th century village and monastery were destroyed by the Polish-Lithuanian troops.

1776 was the place the municipal law. Probably at the same time it was renamed in Chelm Krasny ( Red or Beautiful Hill).

1899 reached the city, which they gained some importance as a trading center, the railway line from the direction of Sonkowo.

Culture and sights

The city has a museum of local history.

The churches of the nearby Nicholas Anthony's monastery on the banks of Mologa were destroyed in the Soviet period or left to decay.
