Krenitzin Islands

The Islands Krenitzin (Russian Острова Креницына ) are a group of small islands in the eastern part of the Fox Islands in the eastern Aleutian Islands in Alaska (USA). The Krenitzins between Unalaska and Unimak in the southwest to the northeast. Named islands in this group include Aiktak, Akutan, Akun, Avatanak, Derbin, Kaligagan, Rootok, Round, Tigalda and Ugamak and the islands of the Avatanak Strait Islands. All these islands are part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. The Krenitzins have a total land area of ​​159.533 km ² and is uninhabited.

Probably the Krenitzin Islands were named in 1852 by Captain Mikhail Dmitrievich Tebenkov ( 1802-1872 ) after Captain Pyotr Kuzmich Krenizyn ( 1728-1770 ), who with Mikhail Dmitrievich Levashov ( 1739-1775 ) in 1768 and 1769 over 30 Aleutians, including the Krenitzin Islands and Unimak and the Alaska Peninsula has explored and mapped.
