Lebrija

Lebrija is a Spanish city in the province of Seville, in the autonomous region of Andalusia. It is the hometown of Aelius Anthony of Nebrixa, author of the first Spanish grammar.

Lebrija has 27,395 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013) on an area of 372 km ² and lies at an altitude of 36 m above sea level in the fertile plain of the Guadalquivir. Lebrija is located 72 km south of Seville. The inhabitants of the city are called lebrijanos.

History

The area around Lebrija has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. During the Roman Empire the city was called Nebrissa Veneris. In 1249 Lebrija was carried troops Fernando III. recaptured from the Moors. 1924 Lebrija received city rights.
