Lionello Manfredonia

Lionello Manfredonia ( born November 27, 1956 in Rome ) is a retired Italian footballer.

During his playing career he played as a sweeper, Vorstopper and defensive midfielder.

Career

In the club

Lionello Manfredonia began his career in 1970 in the youth department of Lazio, with whom he was in 1976 Campionato Primavera win. On November 2, 1975, he made ​​his debut in the 1-1 draw in the match against FC Bologna in Serie A. In the following season he was a regular player and became one of Italy's best defender.

In 1980, Lionello Manfredonia was implicated along with his good friend Bruno Giordano in the betting scandal, had also due to its Lazio and AC Milan relegated to Serie B. Manfredonia was sentenced to twelve months in prison and banned for three years and six months.

In the National Team

After eleven appearances for the Italian U21 national team, Lionello Manfredonia debuted on December 3, 1977 in a 3-0 against Luxembourg.

The following year he became national coach Enzo Bearzot, appointed at the age of just 21 years, in the Italian squad for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, where he, however, not a single minute was on the field, as he one in his position with Gaetano Scirea had strong competitors.
