Lipany

Lipany ( before 1948 " Lipiany "; German Sieben Linden, Hungarian Héthárs, latin Septemtiliae ) is a small town in eastern Slovakia.

It is located in the upper valley of the Torysa at the mouth of the creek in the middle of Lipany Saris Valley between the Čergov the north and the Šarišská highlands in the south.

History

The place was built before the 11th century, but was destroyed by the Mongols in 1241. By German colonists, the town was rebuilt, the lands were in 1287, the place itself was first mentioned in writing in 1312 as Tyliis September, 1315 then with the German name Sybunlendum. He was a long time for the reign of Kamenica and Tarczay family and was a market and a trading center. In the 16th century it got the Charter and was awarded from 1909 to 1924 even the seat of a district administration.

Until 1918 the town was the county Sáros a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, then came to the newly created Czechoslovakia and belongs since 1993 to the present-day Slovakia.
