Brezovica, Sabinov District

Brezovica ( to 1965 Slovak " Brezovica nad Torysou "; Hungarian Berzevice ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia with 1689 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Sabinov, kraj a circle of Prešov.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the upper course of the river in the northwest of the Torysa traditional landscape Saris from the Eastern Levočské mountains. The center is located at an altitude of 456 m nm and is located 21 km from Sabinov as well as 39 miles of Levoča.

History

Brezovica was first mentioned in writing in 1317 and is one of the local landowners who had their country seats here. At the beginning of the 13th century established the Gender Berzeviczy a castle above the village ( in 1335 as castrum in Berzevicze mentioned), but which was looped end of the 15th century and today it is as such no longer discernible. In the 14th century it was a market town and remained so until the 19th century. 1600 there were 51 town houses, a Protestant church, parish, school and high school. 1828 are listed 194 houses and 1,745 inhabitants. 1925 burned down half the town.

In addition to the local agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry, the residents work in factories in Lipany, Sabinov and Prešov.
