Lofer is a market town with 1950 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the Austrian state of Salzburg, situated in the Pinzgauer Saalachtal.

Geography

Lofer is located in the Pinzgauer Saalachtal, framed by the mountains of the Lofer and Reither stone mountains, in the north of the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, west of the Pass Strub. Until the end of May 1923, the village belonged to the district court Lofer, since June 1, 1923 she is part of the judicial district of Saalfelden.

Lofer is the central place of the Saalach Valley, neighboring municipalities are in the valley toads after Kniepass, and St. Martin, Weissbach south.

Lofer is located on the B 178, which runs from Salzburg on the German Small corner and on over the Pass Strub to St. Johann in Tirol, Lofer B branches 311 to Saalfelden and Zell am See.

The municipal council of Lofer has 17 members and is composed as follows since the local council elections in 2009 together:

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality is: " In a split of red and blue shield of an oval golden aura surrounded, standing on the crescent moon shape of the Virgin Mary, a crown on his head, in his right hand the scepter, in his left the baby Jesus cautious. "

History

Documented the city is mentioned at the beginning of the 15th century. However, excavations in 1955 revealed that the foundations of the first still preserved buildings were constructed in the 14th century. Lofer was also an important relay station for horses and their archbishop's messenger that carried messages from Salzburg to Venice. In 1731 the so-called Lofer market fire destroyed the city. After the fire, the building but were re-established. The city became well known because they die as a backdrop for the movie Agent lonely served.

Culture and sights

Economy

Lofer is characterized primarily by agriculture and tourism. It has more than 2,500 beds. A water park, bike trails and family-friendly restaurant complete the picture. The skiing and hiking area Lofer Alm can be reached from the village, the ski resorts of stone plate and the Heutal are nearby.
