Luigi Serafini (bishop)

Luigi Serafini ( born June 6 1808 in Magliano Sabina, † February 1, 1894 in Rome ) was an Italian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Serafini came from a noble family from Urbino and was a nephew of Giovanni Serafini, who in 1843 also created cardinal. He himself studied after visiting schools in his hometown of philosophy at the Collegio Romano and followed law at the University La Sapienza, where he received his doctorate in civil law and canon law on 11 April 1832. After he became a lawyer in 1836 the Curia on July 4, took place on January 19, 1843, he was appointed representative of the Curia in the province of Rieti and on 18 December 1843 prelate. On January 11, 1844, he became a member of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signatura, where he articled clerk and then auditor was first on 21 December 1846. After working as a judge in civil court on 27 September 1847 to 19 March 1850 he was auditor of the Roman Rota, the Court of Appeal as after the Apostolic Signatura second highest court of the Roman Catholic Curia.

On June 25, 1853, he received the ordination to the priesthood. After several years 1858-1870 as the rain of the Apostolic Penitentiary, he was appointed on June 27, 1870 Bishop of Viterbo, Tuscania, and received as such on 17 July 1870, the episcopal ordination. The office of bishop in the diocese of Viterbo, he held until 20 February 1880.

On March 12, 1877 took place its Kreierung to cardinal by Pope Pius IX .. and at the same time his appointment as Cardinal Priest of San Girolamo dei Croati degli Schiavoni. As such, he took part in the conclave in 1878, in which Pope Leo XIII. was chosen.

After he was between 13 May 1884 to the July 31, 1885 Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Supreme Court of the Curia, he was on 31 July 1885 as a successor of Lorenzo Nina Prefect of the Congregation Council and held that post until his replacement by Angelo Di Pietro on 19 June 1893.

At the same time Cardinal Serafini was 1887-1888 Treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals. Thereafter, he was appointed cardinal bishop of Sabina -Poggio Mirteto on June 1, 1888 as well.
