History

For the derivation of the name of the city, the municipal office are three possible variants, of which the two most intelligible are mentioned here:

  • The city's name derives from the Occitan word mar (sea ) and i ei ( here or here was ). In fact, the place was before 12 to 15 million years once the sea.
  • The name is of Latin ( Roman ) origin: Mosconum to the place at that time have been called. He lay on the trade route Antonin- path ( chemin d' Antonin ), the Bayonne Bordeaux Association, and was a trade center for the goods of interest. The former spelling was Milhescq or Miesq. If you take this in the context of the Celtic meaning, so there is a central market.

As previously traveling from Bayonne to Bordeaux lasted three days Magescq was an important stopover for several centuries.
