Magny-en-Vexin

Magny -en- Vexin is a French town with 5858 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Val- d'Oise in the Île- de -France region. It is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Magny -en- Vexin. The residents ' Magnytois "or" Magnytoises " call themselves.

Geography

The town of Magny -en- Vexin is located approximately 60 kilometers north- west of Paris. It is located in the Regional Natural Park Vexin français and is crossed by the river Aubette.

Neighboring communities of Magny -en- Vexin are Saint- Gervais in the north and northwest, Nucourt in the east, in the southeast Banthelu, Charmont in the south and Hodent in the southwest.

The municipality consists of the villages Arthieul (1967 amalgamated ), Blamécourt (1964 amalgamated ), Velannes la Ville and Velannes le Bois.

History

Magny -en- Vexin was already inhabited in Gallo-Roman times. The place is located on the Roman road from Paris to Rouen.

In the 7th century Magny -en- Vexin belonged to the Abbey of Saussay. The place was occupied by the Normans in 885. The Treaty of Saint- Clair -sur -Epte in 911 the Vexin and Magny came back to the Kingdom of France.

Magny -en- Vexin was repeatedly severely damaged during the Hundred Years War. Since the 14th century it belonged to the rule Villeroy, which belonged to the Duke of Alencon from 1550 Catherine de Medici and 1570.

Francis I granted the city rights in the 16th century Magny. In the early modern period Magny was an important stop on the way from Paris to Rouen. The city was surrounded by a fortification, consisting of a ring of walls and four gates. In the 17th and 18th centuries many religious community settled in the city, like the Ursulines and Benedictines.

In the 19th century Magny was the center of an agricultural region.
